These grilled bacon wrapped green beans go from cutting board to plate in under 30 minutes, and there is no boiling or oven involved. The beans go on raw, tossed in a brown sugar butter glaze, wrapped in bacon for 12 minutes over medium high heat to crisp the bacon and caramelize every edge. They come off the grill and they are gone before I can set the platter down.

Twelve Minutes on the Grill and These Green Beans Are Gone

I started making these outside because my oven was full. It was Thanksgiving, and I had a turkey that was not cooperating in my oven, so the green beans got sent to the grill and I stood on the deck in my slippers in November in Minnesota. Worth it.

Turns out the grill version of bacon with green beans is better! Straight onto the grates, flipped every couple of minutes, the bacon crisps better than it ever did in the oven and the brown sugar picks up a little char. Now I make them in July with the oven wide open and no excuse at all. Jason has been caught eating them off the platter on the walk in from the deck, which is why I wrap eleven bundles and plan on ten.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Bacon wrapped green beans don’t have any surprise ingredients. Just basics I always keep on hand.
  • Wrapping veggies in bacon is a way to get even the family’s pickiest eater to enjoy something green. Seriously, bacon and green beans are a game changer!
  • Making this on the grill takes the mess out of the house. No grease splatters in the oven or on the walls to deal with!

Key Ingredients

  • Green beans – French green beans or thinner beans will work best for this dish. Do not use frozen beans!
  • Bacon – Do not use thick cut bacon! It will take longer to cook through.
  • Garlic salt – Using garlic salt ensures the flavor is well distributed throughout the marinade. If you only have garlic powder on hand, add a pinch of salt.
  • Brown sugar – This is what gives the marinade a sweet flavor and will caramelize on the grill.
  • Fresh parsley – Totally optional but such a great way to elevate a dish and wow your guests.

How To Make Bacon Wrapped Green Beans

  1. Prepare marinade. In a small bowl mix together garlic salt, butter, brown sugar and pepper. Pour mixture over the green beans in a mixing bowl and toss to coat.
  2. Prepare rolls. Take 8-10 trimmed green beans and place on one end of a slice of bacon. Roll the green beans up with the bacon and secure it with a toothpick.
  3. Grill. Place the bacon wrapped beans on the grill for 12 minutes, flipping every couple minutes or until bacon is crispy.
  4. Garnish and serve. Sprinkle with parsley, if desired, and serve immediately.

Storage And Reheating

Fridge: These grilled green bean bundles are best enjoyed right away but if there are any leftovers, store them in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Freezer: I don’t recommend freezing leftovers because the green beans will turn quite soggy once reheated.

Reheat leftovers out on the grill if you’ve got it turned on, or heat up in the oven for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit or until hot through. The air fryer is my favorite way to reheat so the bacon crisps up.

Serving Suggestions

The possibilities are endless here! Since the grill is already on, I tend to stick to grilling most of the other components of the meal like Ribs, Pork Chops or even Steak. My family always loves a good starch so I either make up some Baked Potatoes with all the fixings or change it up with Grilled Sweet Potatoes.

Pro Tips

  • To avoid burning toothpicks, soak them in water before assembling the wrapped beans.
  • This dish doesn’t take long, but keep an eye on the grill to avoid flare-ups from the bacon grease!
  • Don’t let any of the marinade go to waste! I brush leftover marinade from the bottom of the mixing bowl onto the beans halfway through grilling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I prepare this dish ahead of time?

Yes! This is a great dish to prepare up to 24 hours in advance. Prepare completely, without cooking and store in an airtight container until ready to grill.

Should I boil the beans before grilling?

I don’t do this because I don’t want to end up with too-soft green beans. By cooking them only on the grill, they’ll always be fork-tender.
