PIN IT FOR LATER!

Admittedly, I’ve neglected my veggie lovers on the blog! Well, maybe that’s not true. I’ve shared yummy recipes for grilled corn on the cob, grilled green beans in foil packets and seasoned grilled sweet potato wedges. But grilling cauliflower?

Oh yes that’s a thing!

Have you ever had cauliflower steak? Oh my gosh, it’s soooo good! Cauliflower stepped up and became much more popular in recent years. So if you have been looking for a sign to barbecue cauliflower, this is it!

I’ve made cauliflower steak on the grill and also in a cast iron skillet. Both work great and it’s an easy way to enjoy a delicious vegetable.

Ingredients for Cauliflower Steak

  • Cauliflower – the bigger the better since you will need to cut your steaks thick so they don’t crumble
  • Seasoning – sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika
  • Olive oil – helps to coat the cauliflower in seasoning and prevent it from sticking to the grill
  • Parsley – fresh parsley adds fresh flavor and a beautiful pop of green to the finished product

Helpful Tools

  • Grill
  • Chef’s knife
  • Grill tongs
  • Basting brush

How to Cook Cauliflower Steaks

  • Prep Grill – Preheat the grill to medium heat
  • Slice Cauliflower – Remove the outer leaves from each cauliflower head. Slice off the bottom stem end so that you have a flat base to work from.
Slice the cauliflower into 2-3 steaks
  • Season Cauliflower – Brush one side of the steaks with olive oil. In a small bowl mix together the salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika. Sprinkle over the steaks.
  • Grill – Place cauliflower carefully on grill, grill 5 to 6 minutes. Flip and grill side two until the cauliflower is tender. Remove from the grill and sprinkle with chopped parsley.

Pro Tip

The steaks are very fragile (which is why you slice them so thick). Be careful when you’re placing them on the grill and also when you flip them so they don’t break apart.

Can You Grill Cauliflower In the Oven or on Your stove Top?

Absolutely! When the weather turns cold or it’s too hot to grill outside, this meal can certainly be made on an indoor grill.

Just preheat the grill pan over medium heat on the stovetop. Place cauliflower steaks on pan and cook for 5-6 minutes or until golden brown on bottom. Gently flip and cook until the other side of the steak has grill marks.

Can I make Cauliflower Steaks in the Oven?

If you would like to roast the cauliflower in the oven follow these instructions instead of placing on the grill.

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. Place seasoned cauliflower on baking sheet.
  3. Place baking sheet in oven for 10-15 minutes. Gently turn over each steak and roast 15-20 more minutes or until tender and golden.

What is the Best way to cut cauliflower steaks?

  • Choose a large cauliflower.
  • Trim the stems and trim off the bottom of the core.
  • Place core side down and slice down the middle of the cauliflower, slicing it in two.
  • Continue slicing the cauliflower making about 1 inch slices. You’ll get about three slices from each head of cauliflower.
  • Reserve the sides and any florets that pop off for another meal or make this easy grilled cauliflower with them.

I’ve seen sliced cauliflower steaks at the grocery store so you could always grab those too.

How Long Does It Take To Grill Cauliflower Steaks?

Surprisingly, it only takes about 10 minutes to cook the steaks on the grill – 5 minutes per side. You’ll cook the vegetable until it is tender.

Why Is My Cauliflower Not Getting Crispy?

Usually, cauliflower doesn’t get very crispy if it is overcrowded on a pan. It needs some room so the hot air can circulate and crisp it up evenly. So be sure to leave a little bit of room around the steaks if you are cooking other parts of your meal on the grill too.

What to do with leftovers

Store leftover cauliflower steaks in an airtight container in the fridge up to three days. You can chop the extra cauliflower up and add it to a salad, pasta or stir fry. Feeling like really changing it up? Add chopped cauliflower steaks to our smoked mac and cheese!

How to reheat Cauliflower Steaks

You will definitely not want to microwave these – they won’t be as crispy. Lightly oil your grill pan and reheat the cauliflower steaks at medium heat.

Ingredients

  • 2 heads cauliflower
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons fresh parsley for garnish chopped

Instructions

  • Heat a grill to medium or about 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Remove the outer leaves from each cauliflower head. Cut off the bottom stem end so that you create a flat base and can stand the cauliflower up on a cutting board.
  • Resting the cauliflower on the stem cut the head into 2 very thick or 3 more moderate “steaks.” Reserve side or small pieces that break off in small bowl.
  • Brush one side of each cauliflower steak with the olive oil.
  • In a small bowl mix remaining ingredients except parsley. Sprinkle evenly over both sides of cauliflower.
  • Place cauliflower carefully on grill, close cover and let cook for 5 to 6 minutes, until the bottom is beginning to char. Carefully flip the cauliflower, then re-cover the grill and cook 5 additional minutes, until the cauliflower is tender. Remove from the grill.
  • Sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired. Serve immediately.

Tips

If you would like to roast the cauliflower in the oven follow these instructions instead of placing on the grill.
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Place seasoned cauliflower on baking sheet.
  3. Place baking sheet in oven for 10-15 minutes. Gently turn over each steak and roast 15-20 more minutes or until tender and golden.
Save the rest of the cauliflower and sprinkle extra seasoning on them with olive oil. Place in grill basket and grill along side the steaks!
