Want to know my favorite way to make pizza? You are looking at it! Grilled Pizza is the BEST. Hands down favorite.

The crust is perfectly crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside and essentially what dreams are made of.

It reminds me of wood fired oven or as close as I can get at home without have a wood oven!

Don’t be intimidated by making pizza on the grill. We have listed easiest way to make it with tips and tricks.

The best tip is it cooks FAST so don’t walk away. Monitor it closely because the grill is set to such a high temperature!

Simple Ingredients

The ingredients you need are the exact same as you would for a regular pizza.

Grab your pizza dough, we recommend this homemade pizza dough, that anyone can make. It makes enough for two pizzas.

Then your pizza sauce, cheese (grab a block of Mozzarella and grate it yourself for the ultimate melt), olive oil and favorite pizza toppings.

That’s it!

Steps to Grilling Pizza

A few simple steps and you’ll have an amazing pizza hot off the grill. Just look below! See, anyone can make this at home!

  • Pizza dough rolled out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Pizza dough rolled out on parchment paper lined baking sheet. Pricked with fork several time and brushed with olive oil.
  • Spatula lifting pizza crust off grill grates to show grill marks on it.
  • Grilled pizza crust with grill grate marks on pizza pan.
  • Grilled pizza crust on sheet pan topped with pizza sauce.
  • Pizza crust on sheet pan topped with sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese and pepperoni before cooking.
  • Roll Out Dough – The first thing you want to do is to roll out your dough, either homemade or store bought. You can either use a rolling pin and roll it or stretch and shape it with your finger tips. We recommend rolling it or stretching, letting it sit five minutes and stretching it more. Try to get about a 12” circle, but as you can see oblong works too!
  • Prep Dough – After it’s shaped prick the dough with a fork to make sure you don’t have air bubbles when you grill it. Then brush one side with olive oil.
  • Grill Dough – Place the dough with the olive oil side down on a hot grill. The grill should be HOT. We recommend 450-500 degrees F. Grill the dough for about 3 minutes monitoring it carefully. It cooks fast. Brush the side of the dough that’s face up with olive oil. You will want grill marks on the dough, but just so it’s set, not cooked through.
  • Top Pizza – Now, you either have the choice to fill the dough over and top the pizza on the grill, which means you need to work quickly. The other option is to remove the dough to a sheet pan with the grilled side up and top it off the grill. Brush pizza sauce over the top, then sprinkle with cheese and desire toppings.
  • Grill Pizza – Place your pizza back on the grill or just shut the lid of the grill if you topped the pizza on the grill. Continue to cook for about 5 minutes or until cheese is melted and toppings are hot. Remove and let rest for 3 minutes then enjoy!

Pizza Combinations

Here are a few of our favorite flavor combinations to inspire your next pizza creation!

  • Margarita – Combination of your favorite pizza sauce, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil and grated Parmesan
  • Hawaiian – Top with a layer of pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella, Canadian bacon and pineapple.
  • Veggie – A thin layer of pizza sauce, cheese and thinly sliced pepper, red onion, baby Bella mushrooms, sweet cherry tomatoes, jalapeno, etc.
  • BBQ Chicken – A layer of BBQ sauce, chopped or shredded cooked chicken breast, and a mixture of shredded cheddar and mozzarella.
  • Pulled Pork – Start with a layer of BBQ sauce, shredded Monterey jack cheese, mozzarella, sharp cheddar cheese, leftover pulled pork, red onion and pineapple tidbits.
  • All Meat – A layer of pizza sauce, shredded Mozzarella cheese and then pile on all the meat like ham, Canadian bacon, pepperoni, cooked and crumbled sausage and bacon.

Expert Tips

  • We recommend rolling out your dough on a piece of parchment paper. Then when it’s time to transfer the dough to the grill simply flip it over onto the grill grates. Peel back the parchment paper and you are set.
  • If you are topping the pizza while it’s on the grill make sure all your toppings are by the grill and ready to go. Work quickly as the pizza is continuing to cook during this time.
  • Make mini pizza and let the kids make their own individual pizzas. The cooking time is a little less so just monitor carefully.
  • You can make the crust ahead of time by grilling it lightly on both sides. Let it cool on a rack before you wrap it in to store it. When ready to use just grill it again, paint with sauce and top and grill to finish.

Ingredients

  • 1 pizza dough
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 c. pizza sauce
  • 1-2 c. Mozzarella cheese shredded
  • Favorite pizza toppings such as herbs, thinly sliced vegetables, pepperoni, salami, prociutto, diced tomatoes, spinach, etc.

Instructions

  • Heat grill for high direct heat to around 450-500 degrees F.
  • Gather all your toppings so you have them handy.
  • Roll out dough into a circle or as close as you can get to one. After you rolled it out or shaped it with your hands on a lightly covered surface, let it sit for 5 minutes and then roll it again. This lets the dough relax and stretch out easier. Do not make a raised rim.
  • Prick dough with fork several times. Brush one side of the dough with olive oil. This is the side that will be face down on the grill.
  • Lay the olive oil side of the dough face down on the hot grill. Brush the top of the dough with olive oil. Close lid and cook about 3 minutes. Use the tongs to lift up the dough check on how it is doing. You want grill marks on it but you don't want it to be crispy, just set. Monitor closely!
  • Remove the dough from the grill and place on a sheet pan with grilled side up. You can also flip and leave it on the grill and top on the grill, but you need to work FAST doing it this way and I find it easier to remove and top.
  • Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce on the grilled side of the dough. Add your cheese and toppings to the pizza dough.
  • Place pizza back on grill and cook 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and toppings cooked through.
  • Drag the pizza off the grill with tongs or slide pizza peel under it. Let cool fro 3-5 minutes or until and then enjoy!
