Ingredients For Shrimp Marinade
- Raw shrimp – Use fresh shrimp if it is accessible to you but we tend to use frozen shrimp and thaw it in the fridge overnight. Buying deveined shrimp will make less work. Keep the tail on for a bit more flavor, and to make it a little more visually appealing. Jumbo shrimp are best so they don’t overcook or fall through the grill grates.
- Olive oil – This will add a subtle flavor and help the marinade to stick to the shrimp.
- Soy sauce – Adds savory and umami flavor. Use tamari or coconut aminos in it’s place if you do not eat soy.
- Lemon juice – A dash of fresh citrus will add a brightness to the shrimp.
- Honey – Adds a little sweetness and will caramelize while cooking.
- Worcestershire sauce – Enhances the flavor of the shrimp.
- Dijon mustard – The acidity will help to tenderize the shrimp and also adds a tangy flavor to the marinade.
- Garlic – Fresh minced garlic adds great flavor to the shrimp.
- Seasoning – Kosher salt and ground black pepper will enhance the flavors in this dish.
How To Marinade Shrimp
- In a medium bowl, stir all the marinade ingredients together until the garlic is fully incorporated.
- Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels then place in the marinade and toss to combine. Cover and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes up to 2 hours.
- Place the marinated shrimp on preheated grill grates and cook for 3 minutes per side.
- Remove from the grill and enjoy.
Pro Tips
- Leaving the shrimp in the marinade for too long can actually ruin their texture, so keep an eye on the clock! The acid will start to cook the shrimp if they are left too long.
- Grill the marinated shrimp on skewers if you prefer for easy flipping on the grill. If you use wooden or bamboo skewers, be sure to soak them beforehand.
- If you like a little heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes in the marinade.
- Sprinkle shrimp with chopped fresh parsley on a serving platter.
Storage And Reheating
Throw away any unused marinade that is left in the mixing bowl.
Fridge: Store leftover marinated shrimp in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
Freezer: Once cooled, freeze leftover shrimp in a single layer on a parchment line baking sheet before storing in a freezer bag or airtight container. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
To reheat leftover grilled shrimp, use a low heat on the stovetop. Add a little water for moisture and cover. Heat until hot throughout.
How To Tell Shrimp Is Fully Cooked
Shrimp turn from translucent gray to an opaque orange-pink color when they are cooked through and safe to eat. They also begin to curl into a C-shape. Shrimp that has curled into more of an O-shape is overcooked. If you want to use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of shrimp, it should reach 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
The whole family is going to love the flavor of this marinade and it’s so quick to put together, it’s a win for everyone! Juicy, tender shrimp will become a new family favorite.
