Smoked Apple Pie

This might come as a big surprise, but the smoker can be used for baking! When it’s time for baking, whether it’s the holidays when oven space is at a premium OR summertime when the last thing you want to do is heat up your house – break out your Traeger or your electric smoker!

What? You betcha!

I’ve shared grilled and smoked desserts before; Blueberry Lemon Cobbler on the Grill, Grilled Apple Dump Cake or Smoked Strawberry Crisp. There’s more to it than simply using your smoker as an oven though. Smoked desserts have even more flavor!

In fact, you may have even visited the orchard this fall, with a pile of the BEST apples it’s time to make a Smoked Apple Pie!

My husband took our favorite Apple Crumb Pie, changed a few things to his liking and then we gave it a ride on our smoker.

AMAZING.

In fact, I think he’s bringing the pie to Thanksgiving after taking a bite of this. It was still warm, plus topped with a little vanilla ice cream. I fell in love. With the apple pie. With my husband a little more. I think it was a win/win situation!

Sweet apples piled on a flaky crust topped with a delicious crumble topping. Doesn’t that sound heavenly? Like I said before, don’t forget the vanilla ice cream and if you get really wild and crazy drizzle it with a little caramel sauce!

Grocery List for Smoked Apple Pie

  • Apples
  • Pie crust
  • sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Flour
  • Quick oats
  • Butter
  • Cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Applewood chips

How long does it take a Traeger Grill to heat or preheat?

10-15 minutes – you’ll want to make sure it’s preheated completely before baking your pie.

What are the best chips to use for this recipe?

I recommend applewood chips – it ads another layer of flavor to this recipe!

My electric smoker only goes to 275. How long would you recommend it bake?

Maybe a dumb question, but what’s the best way to keep this gluten free and THANKS!!! Will be making this on the recteq! 😍

You’d need to use a gluten free crust, gluten free flour and do a different topping as oats have gluten. I’m not an expert thought so I can’t guarantee this is gluten free!

That is really up to you! We prefer a sweeter variety when making apple desserts but you could also go with something more tart like granny smith to balance out the sugar. Any apple will make a great dessert, it’s all about your preference!

I’m new to baking. For the crumble, is the butter at room temp or what? I’ll be using

You’ll want it slightly cold so you can cut it in with do forks. Just kind of smush it all together! It’s kind of fail proof 🙂

My daughter asked me to make this for her b-day, can u use pre made crust and do u smoke it in a tin foil pie plate. I have seen a couple where you use glass. Don’t wanna screw up her b-day pie!! lol

We used a glass pie plate. I haven’t tested it in the foil plate. I’d just make sure it didn’t cook to fast b/c the tin might heat faster. We bought a pre-made Pillsbury crust and just put it in the glass pie plate! It comes pre-rolled out 🙂

So after reviewing the instructions, is it 1.5 hours in the smoker or 4.5? At the top of the page it says 4.5. Just curious.

    Thanks!
