Did you know there was white BBQ Sauce? This twist on a traditional BBQ sauce is tangy, creamy and delicious. We love putting Alabama White BBQ Sauce on our grilled chicken, pulled pork, fish, burgers and lots more!
I had never heard of this BBQ sauce, but once I tried it I was hooked. Give me all the reasons to make it! Use it as a dipping sauce for some juicy grilled chicken legs, or maybe a whole smoked chicken?
What does Alabama White BBQ Sauce taste like?
First of all, it’s completely different than your traditional red BBQ sauce. Instead of the red, tomato-based BBQ sauce we are used to it’s a slightly sweet, very tangy and has a hint of spice.
Plus, it’s totally addictive and soon you’ll be dipping everything in it!
What is White BBQ Sauce Made of?
The main ingredient in this sauce is mayonnaise. It’s thinned out with vinegar and that gets a kick from the horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Whatever you pair with it you’ll love this White barbecue sauce!
- Mayonnaise – Gives this unique BBQ sauce it’s white color and creamy texture!
- Apple cider vinegar – Adds a pop of bright acidity.
- Garlic powder and onion powder – Add tons of flavor.
- Spicy brown mustard – Brings some heat!
- Brown sugar – Adds sweetness to balance the acid from the vinegar.
- Worcestershire sauce – Gives the sauce a deep savory flavor.
- Salt – To enhance all the flavors!
- Horseradish – Adds spiciness.
1 Easy Step To Prepare!
We recommend whipping up this easy BBQ sauce at least two hours ahead of time so the flavors can meld together. It’s even better the next day!
- Just grab a bowl and dump all the ingredients into the bowl, then whisk it until smooth.
- Pop it into the refrigerator after you mix it.
Where did Alabama White BBQ Sauce originate?
It originates from Northern Alabama! It was created in 1925 in Decatur, Alabama by Bob Gibson. He started a restaurant that is an institution today called Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q. This sauce is a favorite because it clings to your grilled or smoked meat with a rich flavor you won’t get anywhere else.
No matter where you hail from you are going to love this tangy white BBQ Sauce! but once you try it you’ll be making it no matter where you live. It’s a staple there for serving on grilled chicken and more foods hot off the grill or out of the smoker.
It seems everywhere you go they have a twist on their favorite BBQ sauces. In Kansas City BBQ they are known for their thick, sweet sauce. Travel over to North Carolina and their sauce is thin and have a vinegar base. South Carolina prefers a mustard base sauce!
This white barbecue sauce is definitely one of our favorites!
How To Serve It!
I love this sauce because there are so many ways to use it!
- Traditionally, the BBQ joints smoke a chicken and then dunk it in sauce allowing the chicken to soak up all the sauce.
- Another option is to baste your chicken with the sauce as you grill it.
- We love dunking our favorite grilled meats, like chicken wings, in it and serving it as a side.
- You can also serve it with your favorite pulled pork for another delicious and easy way to enjoy it and mix it up a bit.
- Switch up your ranch dip and dunk your favorite vegetables in this white barbecue sauce instead.
Storage Tips!
- Store in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to one week.
- If you are basting meat with this sauce remember to take out what you need and toss any leftovers you dipped your basting brush into after you prepare your meat so you don’t cross-contaminate your sauce.
Put a twist on BBQ chicken night and give this Alabama White BBQ Sauce a try! You can never have too many barbecue sauce recipes, right? Once you try this one, I know it will be a favorite at your house like it is at ours.
