Blackened seasoning not only works to add flavor to your dish, but it also crusts the outside of the meat and makes a lovely texture. By making homemade blackened seasoning you can also easily adjust the heat level. That way, if you don’t like food with a lot of heat, you can make a mix that still has so much flavor! Ingredients for Blackened Seasoning

  • Onion powder – This is a universally tasty flavor! It goes well with any type of meat and will add tons of flavor.
  • Garlic powder – We love to add garlic powder to my seasoning mixes and use minced garlic for extra flavor along with it when we’re cooking a tasty meal.
  • Cayenne pepper – Don’t have cayenne pepper? Chili powder will work, as well as powdered red pepper.
  • Smoked paprika – Trust us, reach for the smoked paprika rather than the regular one. It adds so much flavor to this incredible spice blend.
  • Salt and black pepper – Salt will bring out the flavor of whatever you’re cooking and black pepper adds a nice depth as well.
  • Dried thyme – Throw a bit of an herby flavor into the mix with a little bit of dried thyme.
  • Dried oregano – This dried herb actually pairs really well with tons of different types of meat.

How to Make Blackened Seasoning

Carefully measure out each of the ingredients for this spice mix and add them all to a small mixing bowl.

Then mix together with a whisk until well combined. You can also put all of the ingredients into a mason jar and shake well to combine.

How to Use Blackened Seasoning

This seasoning mix can be used on many different types of meats and any cooking method that you prefer. Make delicious dishes like blackened fish, blackened chicken, or blackened shrimp.

How to Store Homemade Blackened Seasoning

For best results, store your seasoning in a glass spice jar in a cool and dry place. A mason jar or another airtight container will work too! Be careful not to get any moisture in the container or the seasoning could develop clumps. You can store your blackening seasoning for 6 to 12 months.

How do you get blackening seasoning to stick?

Dredge the meat that you plan to season in some melted butter or olive oil. Then you can sprinkle the seasoning evenly over all of the meat. Gently press the seasoning into the to help it adhere.

What is the difference between cajun and blackened seasoning?

There are quite a few similarities between the two seasonings, but they are a bit different. Cajun seasoning tends to have more kick to it and blackened seasoning tends to be a bit more salty. However, you can use some blackened seasoning as a substitute in recipes that call for cajun seasoning!

Pro Tips for the Best Blackened Seasoning

  • Store in a spice jar with a shakeable lid so that it is easy to sprinkle the seasoning over the outside of the meat that you are planning to cook.
  • Adjust the seasonings to taste! You can make this seasoning spicier if you want or add more depth of flavor with extra herbs.
  • Make sure the spices and herbs that you are using are fresh and not expired. This will ensure the best flavor and help lengthen the shelf life of your spice mix.
