helpful tools
How to Grill Asparagus
- Drizzle the trimmed asparagus with olive oil, sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper.
- Brush the grates of a preheated grill lightly with olive oil.
- Place the seasoned asparagus spears directly on the grill grates.
- Grill the asparagus spears for 4 minutes per side until lightly charred. Use tongs to turn them often so that they are grilled on all sides.
- Serve and enjoy!
How long does it take to grill asparagus?
It takes about 8-10 minutes total to grill the asparagus. Don’t overcook it or it will become mushy. You want it to still have a slight bite when you eat it.
how to know when asparagus is cooked
Asparagus is cooked and ready to eat when it is bright green and a fork can easily pierce the stalk. Check your asparagus often to avoid overcooking it.
Can you grill asparagus on the stove?
If the weather is poor, you can certainly use a stove top grill. Heat the grill pan to medium-high heat. Prepare the asparagus as directed and grill right on the stove.

How to Serve Grilled Asparagus
I like to keep it simple by seasoning with olive oil, salt and pepper but you can certainly doll-up this vegetable. Maybe even add a squeeze of lemon juice before serving!
Compound Butter is a delicious condiment and a great way to finish off asparagus! If you’re using butter, apply it when it comes off the grill and it’s still hot!
It’s easy to make and keeps well in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks. It can also be made ahead and frozen. Parsley and Chive Compound Butter or Dijon-Lemon Butter are great ones to try!
Bernaise Sauce can be drizzled over right before serving! This recipe has a blender version that makes it super easy to whip this up quickly. No need to worry about the eggs scrambling in this recipe!
Or try a Classic Hollandaise Sauce – it’s so easy to make in a blender, but looks and tastes super fancy!
It’s also a great side to serve with Smoked Venison Roast!
why trim the woody ends of asparagus?
It is important to trim the last inch or so of asparagus because it can lack flavor and most importantly, the woody part is really tough and unpleasant to chew.
how to trim the ends of asparagus
There are two ways to trim your delicious asparagus to prepare it for cooking. First, you can use a sharp knife to cut about an inch or so off of the end of the asparagus stalk. The other way, is to simply bend the stalk at the base until it breaks on it’s own. You can use both methods at the same time if you bend one and then use it as a guide to cut the rest!
how to store leftover asparagus
Store leftover grilled asparagus in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Oil might congeal but don’t be alarmed! It will turn back to liquid when the asparagus is reheated. This is the best asparagus, so you probably won’t have any leftovers to worry about!
how to reheat grilled asparagus
Reheat grilled asparagus on the stovetop in a frying pan with a little butter or oil
I don’t recommend using a microwave because it might turn out too soft.
pro tips
- Don’t forget to trim the woody ends of your asparagus before seasoning it.
- The thicker the better for asparagus on the grill because it is going directly on the grill grates.
Grilled asparagus is a great side dish choice if you’re having a cookout! There is so much flavor in every bite of this perfectly seasoned, tender grilled vegetable.
