Walleye Sandwich
Spring is in the air! Can I get a hip-hip-hooray for that?
After the long winter in Minnesota, I’m so ready for warmer temps and getting outside.
I’m also ready for grilling and baseball season!
There’s nothing that screams summer more to me than a baseball game or firing up the charcoal grill with Kingsford® Original Charcoal for the first time.
Walleye Sandwich Recipe
As you might suspect, I love trying out new recipes on our charcoal grill.
As a true born-and-bred Minnesotan, I also love walleye!
When Kingsford ask me to try out this delicious Walleye Sandwich recipe (they have it in their new cookbook that represents famous MLB food-fare that is prepared on a charcoal grill from all 30 teams), I happily obliged!
I always love a good Walleye Sandwich, and I knew it’d be even better when it was prepared on my charcoal grill with Kingsford Original Charcoal because it creates a smoky wood-fired flavor that all BBQ lovers enjoy!
I can see why Kingsford Original Charcoal has been the gold standard of grilling since 1920!

While I enjoy taking in a Minnesota Twins baseball game in real person, it doesn’t happen often due to the fact we live three hours away from the stadium and have three kids!
That’s why it’s easier to pick up our groceries at Walmart for this delicious Walleye Sandwich, including our Kingsford Charcoal, and then make dinner at home while watching the kids play outdoors and enjoying some time on the patio. You can bet the Twins game is on the TV or radio!
I was able to quickly locate the Kingsford Charcoal in Walmart by the grills in the outdoor section!
When our neighbors smelled the grill, they popped on over to enjoy dinner with us out on our back patio!
That’s another reason I love spring and summer.
Neighbors are out and about more and stop by to visit. I can never say no to a relaxing night on the patio while enjoying a Twins game and some visiting with the neighbors!
Maybe I should plan a baseball themed grill out and invite the whole neighborhood over! Wouldn’t that be fun? We all try to get together at least once a summer, so this would be the perfect excuse!

- Olive oil
- Kosher salt
- Ground black pepper
- Walleye fillets

How to Make Walleye Sandwiches
- To make the tartar sauce, whisk the mayonnaise, chopped dill pickle, 1 teaspoon lemon zest, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon fresh or 1 teaspoon dried dill, half of the garlic, and 1 tablespoon olive oil in a small bowl until smooth. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
- Using Kingsford® Charcoal, prepare the grill for direct cooking and preheat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a small bowl, combine the remaining lemon zest and juice, dill, garlic, and olive oil. Add hot sauce to taste. Set aside. Season the fish fillets on both sides with salt and pepper.
- Grease the grill grates and place directly over the prepared medium coals. Slightly overlap the lemon slices on the grill grates in a pattern to accommodate the fish fillets. Place the fish directly on the lemon slices. Brush with the lemon-dill mixture. Cover the grill and cook for 10-12 minutes or until the fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Don’t turn the fish.
- To assemble, lightly toast and butter the rolls. Spread the tartar sauce on both sides of each roll and place one fish fillet into each roll. Top with pickle slices, shredded lettuce and tomato. Serve immediately.
I’m sure my neighbors wouldn’t mind if we served them this delicious Walleye Sandwich either.
I love the homemade tartar sauce that is just the right amount of tangy.
The smoky, wood-fired flavor of the walleye from being grilled on our charcoal grill with Kingsford Charcoal has an amazing lemon dill sauce on it.
