Montreal Seasoning in Bowl

You just need paprika, pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, coriander, dill and red pepper flakes. Grab them and make this easy steak seasoning! Got leftover seasoning? Store it in a mason jar for later!

We love pairing our grilled steaks with side dishes off the grill to. This makes an easy clean up after you are doing enjoying your meal. Plus, it’s easier than running inside and outside to make the meal!

You’ve got to try our favorite Baked Potatoes on the grill or foil packet corn on the cob. If you’ve got a sweet tooth finish of your meal with Blueberry Lemon Cobbler just don’t forget the ice cream on top!

Of course great grilling flavor starts with a great cut of meat, but if you’re looking to pump up your grilling game, it’s time to make your own dry rub like this Montreal Steak Seasoning!

I fell in love with the store bought version and I was on a mission to make my own after that. I love having it my cupboard to grab and use whenever I want and I also like that I know what’s actually in the seasoning!

What is Montreal Steak Seasoning

This steak seasoning gets it’s name because it was introduced first in Montreal Canada by Romanian Jewish Immigrants.

The flavor of this seasonings is bold and zesty. The main ingredients usually found in this seasoning are salt, pepper, garlic, onion, dill, and coriander. I added in paprika and crushed red pepper to really give it a ton of flavor.

I think you’ll love this easy steak seasoning as much as we do.

Why You’ll Love this Homemade Montreal Steak Seasoning

  • Saves money $$$! Of course!
  • You can control the ingredients (no preservatives)
  • You control the flavor and ensure it won’t be bland or too spicy!
  • It tastes better! Hands down your homemade version will taste 100 times better than store bought!

Ingredients in Montreal Steak Seasoning

  • Paprika
  • Black pepper
  • Salt
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Coriander
  • Dried dill
  • Crushed red pepper flakes

It takes just minutes to make and sealed well, it will last for months in your pantry!

Variations

Remember the best part of making seasonings at home is you can control the ingredients. Want more heat? Add some cayenne pepper? Don’t like onion? Lessen the amount of onion powder. You get the idea!

How do I store Homemade Montreal Steak Seasoning?

Make sure it’s stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place otherwise it can end up getting caked together. It will be good for up to 6 months.

Don’t forget to store your homemade seasonings is in airtight containers. A jelly jar works great for this! Seal jars tightly to keep the moisture out. Keeping the jars in a cool location and out of bright lights will help them keep their flavor and last longer.

How Do I Apple ASeasoning Rub?

Applying a seasoning is easy!

  • Start by blotting the meat with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  • Next generously coat the meat with olive oil.
  • Now with one hand sprinkle on the seasonings, don’t forget to season the second side and the edges if it’s a thick cut of meat! Sprinkling with one hand and rubbing the spices in with your other hand will eliminate cross-contamination and be less messy.

Don’t be afraid to rub it in well to completely flavor the meat!

How Long Should I Leave a Seasoning on a Meat?

  • Steak, ribs and brisket will really benefit with long exposure to all of these flavors. 2 hours, overnight, even a couple of days will make beef super flavorful!
  • Pork and chicken – if you can leave it on up to 24 hours, the rubs will have soaked into the meat, so delicious!
  • Fish and seafood are much more tender cuts and do not take as long to absorb dry rubs. 15 minutes to an hours will give you delicious flavor!

How to Grill a Steak with Montreal Seasoning

  1. Start by taking the meat out of the refrigerator and allowing it to come to room temperature. For a steak, about 20 minutes.
  2. High heat on the grill, heat it up!
  3. Of course your steak is already oil and seasoned with Montreal Steak Seasoning, but if not brush it lightly with olive oil and season well.
  4. Grill to your degree of doneness, get that steak charred and golden brown because that is what will give it big flavor.
  5. After removing from the grill, allow it to “rest” on a platter, loosely covered with foil. This gives the juices time to redistribute into the meat. It makes your steak that much more flavorful, juicy and tender!

More Uses for Montreal Seasoning!

Don’t stop with steaks! This seasoning is great on any type of potato (french fries, baked potatoes, hash browns etc.). Plus it’s great on steamed, grilled or roasted vegetables.

More Homemade Rubs & Seasonings!

  • Homemade Taco Seasoning – why buy a packet when you have everything you need to make it at home!
  • Dry Rub for Pork – perfectly sweet, it’s the best balance for pork!
  • BBQ Chicken Dry Rub – this has a ton of flavor and is delicious on chicken!

I wanted to try this seasoning after hearing it mentioned on “Letterkenny”, but every recipe and product I could find included minced onion, save this one. I have IBS and can’t eat onions or garlic (among other things like beans and soy), although I can and do use them in powder form as replacements. In fact, every rub recipe you’ve included here is stuff I can make and eat myself. Can not think you enough for this. This is a killer recipe for grilled shrimp, which is what I had on hand. Can’t wait to try this on a steak. Grill marks, bud!
