You don’t need to travel for a great sandwich. This Blackstone Chopped Cheese brings the iconic New York bodega sandwich straight to your backyard griddle. Seasoned ground beef is chopped with our favorite melty American cheese, then piled onto toasted hoagie rolls and topped with crisp lettuce and fresh tomato.

There is just something about eating a sandwich from a good old hole in the wall place that you heard about from your friend’s aunt’s friend’s neighbour, ya know? A classic New York chopped cheese sandwich is just that, and we love the convenience of making one at home whenever the craving hits outside on our Blackstone griddle.

What Is Chopped Cheese?

This is a classic New York City bodega sandwich served on a toasted hoagie. Onion and seasoned ground beef are cooked together on a griddle before chopping cheese into the mixture. Add it onto the hoagie with lettuce and tomato and you’re all set!

Ingredients For Blackstone Chopped Cheese

  • Hoagie buns – Hoagies are the traditional size and shape for this type of sandwich. You can use any other type of bun if you prefer, just make sure when you portion the beef and onions that it is the right amount for your size and shape of bun.
  • Mayonnaise – We do not recommend using Miracle Whip because of its unique sweet flavor.
  • Ground beef – Be sure to use a 80/20 ground beef. Any less fat and you risk it drying out.
  • Seasonings – Salt, ground black pepper and garlic powder are all you need to grab from the spice cabinet to have a flavorful sandwich.
  • American cheese – You can use slices of any other cheese you might have on hand.
  • Lettuce – Shredded lettuce adds the perfect crunch! We love to use iceberg, but feel free to use butter, romaine, really whatever you have on hand!
  • Tomato – Thinly sliced tomato adds flavor to the chopped cheese sandwich and is optional if tomato isn’t your favorite. We recommend seasoning with salt and pepper.

How To Make Chopped Cheese On Blackstone

  1. Cook onions in melted butter until soft and push to the side to keep warm before adding the ground beef to the griddle.
  2. Slowly break apart the beef and let it brown. Do not drain or remove any of the fat that accumulates on the griddle! Mix the onions into the beef then divide mixture into four equal sized portions.
  3. Add 2 slices of the American cheese over each portion and cook for 2 minutes, until gooey and melted. Using a spatula, chop the cheese into the meat mixture. Meanwhile, add the buns to the griddle and toast them for 2 minutes.
  4. Transfer each portion onto a toasted hoagie, add shredded iceberg lettuce and sliced tomatoes to serve.

Pro Tips

  • Make sure your griddle is nice and hot before starting to keep cooking nice and even.
