PIN IT FOR LATER!

Picture this. You are diving into a juicy burger topped with gooey cheese, an over easy egg, lettuce and crisp bacon. You have just met the amazing Fried Egg Burger.

You can either start with a pre-formed hamburger from the store or make our Hamburger Patties.

Turn it into a juicy cheeseburger piled onto a toasted hamburger bun with leaf lettuce, crisp bacon and an over easy egg.

You might never eat a plain cheeseburger again after you try this fried egg burger recipe!

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • Start with a store bought hamburger patty to make it super easy or make your own.
  • The toasted bun takes it over the top. Don’t ever skip toasting your burger bun!
  • Breakfast, lunch or dinner? This brunch burger can be served anytime of the day!

Ingredients for Fried Egg Burger

  • Hamburger patties – Either grab some from the store or make our homemade ground beef patties.
  • Cheese Slices – We went with a sliced American cheese but you can use your favorite cheese. Just make sure it’s a good melting cheese.
  • Bacon Slices – The thicker the better! Maybe try some smoked bacon to really give it the ultimate flavor.
  • Butter – You can’t toast your buns without buttering them!
  • Eggs – We used a large egg but any size egg will do.
  • Lettuce – Leaf lettuce is the best option for this burger.
  • Buns – Grab some hearty buns that will hold up to the burger and toasting.
  • Salt & Black Pepper – Just a little seasoning to taste

How to Make a Fried Egg Burger

  1. Grill Burgers – The first thing you want to do is preheat your grill to 350 – 400 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also use a grill pan on the stove top if you’d like. Place your burgers on the grill or in the pan. Flip after about 3 minutes and then cook an additional 6 minutes. When you have about one minute left of grill time, place slice of cheese on top of each burgers. USDA recommends an internal temperature for 160 degrees Fahrenheit for hamburgers.
  2. Toast Buns – Use a serrated knife to cut open hamburger buns. Butter the insides of your buns and place on grill to toast them.
  3. Prepare Bacon – While the burgers are cooking, prepare bacon in skillet according to directions on package. You can even do this ahead of time and cover with tinfoil to keep warm.
  4. Fry Eggs – Heat a pan with 2 tablespoons of butter over medium high heat. When the butter foams, crack the eggs into the pan, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Reduce the heat to low and season the eggs with salt and pepper. Cover the pan and cook until the whites are set and the egg yolk begins to firm around the edge, about 5 minutes. The key is to not cook these too long so you have that delicious runny egg!
  5. Assemble Burgers – Place a leaf of lettuce on bun, top with burger, bacon and egg.

Helpful Tools

  • Grill
  • Grill pan
  • Meat thermometer
  • Grill turner
  • Flexible turner

What to put on a fried egg burger?

  • Egg – If you don’t love a runny yolk, cook your eggs to over medium or hard!
  • Bun – A pretzel bun is a delicious way to mix this up. Other great options include potato or brioche buns.
  • Cheese – we use American cheese for this burger but other good options are sliced cheddar cheese and Monterey jack cheese.
  • Arugula – Use this to replace the lettuce for a sharp, peppery taste.
  • Onion – Slice and fry an onion to top your burger. Caramelized onions are also delicious if you have the time.
  • Pickles – Always a classic burger topping choice.
  • Avocado – Slice and season a ripe avocado to top your burger with.
  • Hot Sauce – Kick it up a notch!
  • Burger classics – such as tomatoes, mayo and ketchup.

What to serve with fried egg burgers

  • Grilled corn on the cob is perfect for a summer cookout.
  • If you need a salad that is bursting with flavor, try our Mexican Street Corn Salad.
  • My kids will say that BBQ Baked Beans on the Grill is the way to go!

How to Store Leftover burgers

We recommend storing leftover fried egg burgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days. The best way to store the burger is unassembled so each ingredient has it’s own storage container.

How to Reheat Fried Egg Burgers

When ready to enjoy, reheat the patty and eggs in a skillet over low heat. Assemble burger according to directions.

You can also microwave the ingredients to warm them, but this can dry out your burger.

what temperature do i cook the hamburger to?

USDA recommends an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit for hamburgers.

Using a meat thermometer takes out the guesswork!

Pro Tips

    • If you are making your own burgers, use ground beef that is no leaner than 85% but I prefer 80%. Due to the high fat content, your burger will be juicy and full of flavor. Beware that higher fat meat will shrink more when they are grilled.

    • Another tip for making your own hamburger patties is use a light touch when combining seasoning with the ground beef, if you over mix you will be left with dense and heavy burgers.

    • If it seems hard to make the burgers on the grill while making bacon and eggs on the stove top just make the burgers in a frying pan too. You can even toast the bun in a frying pan.

Dare we say this will be your new go-to burger when you fire up the grill? There’s so much flavor you won’t look back after one bite of this bacon and egg burger! Take ‘breakfast for supper’ to a whole new level!
