Ingredients For Grilled Hot Honey Wings

  • Chicken wingettes – Wingettes offer a lot of surface area for maximum flavor. You can use a mix of wingettes (flats) and drumettes for this dish.
  • Olive oil – Or any light tasting oil with a high smoke point like vegetable or canola.
  • Seasoning – Garlic powder, onion powder, salt, ground black pepper and cayenne pepper are all you need to season the wings. If you like a little more heat, add extra cayenne. You can also season with our BBQ Rub if you’ve got it on hand.

Hot Honey Sauce

  • Honey – We typically use liquid honey but if you have creamed honey that will work just fine.
  • Butter – Adds a subtle richness to the sauce and balances the heat of the hot sauce.
  • Hot sauce – Use your favorite store bought hot sauce. Add extra if you like it hot!

How To Make Grilled Hot Honey Wings

Pat the wings completely dry with a paper towel and place in a large mixing bowl.

Add the olive oil to the chicken wings and mix until all the wings are coated.

In a small bowl mix all the seasonings with a whisk. Add the seasoning mixture to the wings and toss until well coated.

Add the seasoned wings to the grill. Grill for 10 minutes, flip the wings and then grill for another 10 minutes or until internal temperature reaches at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

While the wings are cooking, mix up the hot honey sauce. Add butter, honey and hot sauce to a saucepan. Let it simmer together lightly. Give it a taste and decide if you want more hot sauce for heat.

Once the wings are cooked through, remove from the grill and place them in a big serving bowl. Pour all the hot honey sauce over them, toss them well.

Serve immediately while warm.

Pro Tips

  • You can also add cayenne pepper to the butter and hot sauce mixture to kick it up a notch.
  • Honey can burn quite easily, so be sure to toss the wings in the sauce after they are cooked, rather than cook them in it.
  • If you really want to keep all of the cooking for the grill and you’ve got the space on the grates – you can totally mix the hot honey sauce on the grill in cast iron skillet.

Storage And Reheating

Fridge: Store leftover hot honey wings in an airtight container up to 4 days.

Freezer: Once wings are cool, freeze in a single layer before storing in a freezer bag or airtight container. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating for best results. If you know ahead of time you will be freezing some grilled wings, leave the hot honey sauce off of them until they’ve been reheated to be served.

Reheat wings on the grill until they have an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. In a pinch you can also easily reheat them in the air fryer or oven.
