PIN IT FOR LATER!

Oh how we LOVE potatoes around here! What’s not to love about the potato? You can make so many different dishes from this versatile little root vegetable.

Blackstone steak and potatoes is a go to dinner for us, but these smashed potatoes make the best side dish for pretty much any meal. They’re made with simple ingredients and turn out incredible every single time.

The crispy edges on these potatoes is what gets me. That crunchy texture combined with the flavor is a dangerously delicious combination! Put your burger press to the test and make Blackstone smash burger sliders alongside these loaded smashed potatoes on Blackstone. That’d be one tasty meal, that’s for sure!

Why You’ll Love Blackstone Loaded Smashed Potatoes

  • This is a really easy recipe to double or triple. As long as you keep a rotation going on the Blackstone and keep the potatoes warm, you can just keep adding them until you’ve got plenty cooked up!
  • We love making these for parties. They’re kind of similar to loaded potato skins, so they’re perfect game day and any other gathering.
  • It only takes 40 minutes to make this side dish. It’ll come together pretty quickly and the end result is just so worth it.

Ingredients for Blackstone Loaded Smashed Potatoes

  • Sour cream – Feel free to omit this topping if you’re not a fan of sour cream.
  • Shredded cheddar cheese – I love using some fresh shredded cheese on these loaded smashed potatoes. You can use a different type of cheese if you want to!
  • Fresh chives – Dice up some fresh chives as a flavorful topping addition to tasty potatoes.
  • Bacon bits – We like to cook up some bacon in the oven and then crumble it up for crispy bacon bits, better yet make Smoked Bacon and you’ll be drooling!
  • Butter – Butter and potatoes are a match made in heaven! Use this to cook the smashed potatoes on the griddle.
  • Baby potatoes – Yukon gold potatoes are our go-to for this recipe. But whatever kind of potatoes you use, make sure you’ve got some that are small in size.
  • Olive oil – Coat the potatoes in olive oil so that the seasoning will stick and the skin will get crispy.
  • Sea salt – Use the recommended amount of salt, but always taste test and see if your potatoes need some more salt before serving.
  • Garlic powder – Some garlic powder adds so much flavor to this easy side dish.

In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the potatoes for about 15-20 minutes, or until fork tender. Drain off water once cooked.

Preheat your Blackstone griddle to medium-high heat.

In a large bowl, combine the olive oil, garlic powder and salt. Then add in the potatoes and toss until all are coated with the oil.

How to Store Leftover Smashed Potatoes

Allow leftovers to cool and then transfer to an airtight container. For best results, store without the sour cream and chive topping.

FRIDGE: Store any leftover potatoes in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

FREEZER: These smashed potatoes will last about 2 months in the freezer when stored properly!

How to Reheat Smashed Potatoes

We recommend placing leftover smashed potatoes on a baking sheet and reheating in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 5-8 minutes or until warmed through and crispy.

Another great option with a small batch would be to reheat in the air fryer.

The microwave will make leftovers soggy and not get them as crisp!

Why are my smashed potatoes falling apart?

If you’re not having success keeping the smashed potatoes together, there’s a couple things that could’ve gone wrong. Make sure that the potatoes are fork tender after boiling them, otherwise they’ll just crumble when smashed. It’s also important that you do not smash them too flat. The potato skins still need to be able to hold the potatoes together.

Are smashed potatoes the same as mashed potatoes?

Nope! These are two entirely different dishes. Mashed potatoes are much more creamy and combine a lot of potatoes together with butter, milk and other ingredients. Smashed potatoes are bite-sized crispy potatoes loaded with bacon, cheese and other tasty toppings!

What to Serve with Blackstone Loaded Smashed Potatoes

Potatoes go with everything, am I right? We love to serve these with jalapeño popper stuffed burgers, Blackstone blackened pork chops, and smoked steak. They’re also a great swap for fries if you’re serving up some hot dogs!

We even serve these alongside other appetizer favorites! They’re the perfect pairing with things like Texas twinkies and smoked chicken wings.

Pro Tips for the Best Smashed Potatoes

  • Make sure to purchase potatoes that are smaller in size. The more “bite-size” they are, the better!
  • Coat the griddle in butter well so that the potatoes don’t stick. And make sure you’re cooking over medium-high heat too!
  • Feel free to change things up when it comes to seasonings and toppings. You can load these smashed potatoes with extra flavor if you choose some fun spices and herbs.
