In the background, spice jars and a salt and pepper shaker are visible on a kitchen countertop, with a striped kitchen towel in the foreground.

PIN IT FOR LATER!

When the holidays come around, we love to cook a juicy ham and this grilling method is so simple. Cooking ham on the grill has quickly become one of our favorite ways to enjoy this cut of meat during the holidays. It’s so quick to prepare and easy to cook.

You can even use this recipe for meal prep and eat ham all week long. Who doesn’t love a classic ham sandwich for lunch? Or maybe you love a baked omelette and toast! This ham is so versatile, you can use it for every meal.

Invite everyone over for an outdoor holiday meal and you can visit outside with a beverage while the kids run and play and your ham cooks on the grill. Make ahead salads and other sides will help you to stay outside with friends and family instead of cooped up in the kitchen.

why you’ll love this recipe

  • Feeding a crowd is a breeze with this large ham plus it’s so easy to serve when it is spiralled.
  • There is minimal clean up when you use a disposable aluminum pan to grill the ham.
  • Bone-in ham has so much flavor in every single bit and the homemade honey glaze really takes it up a notch.

Ingredients for grilled ham

  • Smoked spiral ham – This cut of ham is super convenient to serve to guests and the smoky flavor is so tasty!
  • Ginger Ale – This soda adds a nice flavor to the ham while keeping it moist.
  • Brown sugar – Light brown sugar offers a perfect sweetness to this dish.
  • Honey – Honey’s sticky texture will help the glaze stick to the ham as well as create a yummy caramelization on the outside of the ham.
  • Apple cider vinegar – This acid will balance the sweetness in the glaze.
  • Garlic – Minced garlic with honey is such a great flavor combo!
  • Dijon mustard – Mustard is a classic addition to any ham, but Dijon offers a distinct flavor.

Bone-in vs Boneless Ham

The spiral ham you buy from your local grocery store or butcher will almost always be bone-in but it is possible to purchase it boneless. I recommend buying bone-in if possible because the bone offers the best taste and helps keep moisture in the meat. As always, whichever type of ham is available to you is perfect.

You can repurpose the ham bone and use it in a soup!

Creamed vs liquid honey

Creamed and liquid honeys both have the same deliciously sweet flavor but when it comes to making a glaze, I recommend using a creamed honey. Creamed honey’s thickness makes it better for even spreading over your ham.

Not to worry, if you have liquid honey at home, it will still work! It will make a bit of a runnier glaze, but you are going to be basting this ham every 30 minutes anyways. The honey you use is totally your preference.

Helpful Tools

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Small saucepan
  • Large foil pan
  • Instant-read thermometer
  • Sharp knife

How to cook a ham on the grill

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the Ginger Ale, brown sugar, mustard, honey and apple cider vinegar. Bring to a boil. Cook until the glaze is reduced by half, about 15 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and dijon; cook 5 minutes longer. Remove from heat.
  2. Lay the sliced ham in a large foil pan. Pull the slices apart and drizzle honey glaze down in between the pieces. After that, brush the top of the ham with glaze.
  3. Place the pan onto the prepared grill for about 3 hours. Baste the ham with the juices in the pan every 30 minutes.
  4. Remove from the grill, tent with aluminum foil and let rest for 15 minutes before eating.
A stainless steel saucepan filled with a dark brown liquid, possibly a simmering sauce or broth, with finely chopped garlic pieces floating on the surface. The pot is placed on a light-colored background, and steam is faintly visible, indicating that the liquid is warm or cooking.
A spiral-cut ham resting in a dark roasting pan filled with a flavorful marinade or glaze. The ham is coated with a sauce that includes minced garlic, giving it a rich, seasoned appearance. The pan sits on a light-colored surface, ready for cooking.
The spiral-cut ham has been placed on a grill inside a dark roasting pan filled with marinade or glaze. The ham is coated with seasonings, including minced garlic, and is beginning the slow cooking process. The grill grates are visible beneath the pan, and the smoky environment suggests it will develop a rich, flavorful crust.
The ham has developed a beautifully caramelized crust, with the spiral-cut layers slightly crisped on the edges. The glaze has thickened and given the ham a glossy sheen, while the bone-in portion remains tender. The pan still holds some of the flavorful juices, ensuring the ham stays moist. The grill's heat has created a rich, smoky exterior, making this a visually stunning and deliciously prepared dish.

pro tips

  • Be sure to put the ham in the pan flat side down so it stays upright and even while grilling.
  • If you don’t love the flavor of Dijon mustard, you can use yellow prepared mustard in it’s place.

How long should I grill a ham for?

Grill the ham about 15-20 minutes per pound of meat. In this case, we are using an 8-10 pound spiral ham and it will take up to 3 hours. The minimum internal temperature of the ham should be 145 degrees Fahrenheit.

Why grill on indirect heat?

Grilling ham on indirect heat will help to keep it moist. The indirect heat cooks the ham slowly and evenly so it doesn’t dry out due to an intense heat. Cooking the ham in an aluminum pan also helps to keep the ham nice and juicy.

why does the ham need to rest?

Resting meat prior to serving allows the juices to redistribute throughout the cut of meat. Tent the ham with aluminum foil to keep it warm.

how to serve grilled ham

I don’t know about you, but a classic Cheesy Scalloped Potato dish is always a hit with a ham supper! If you want to try cooking the whole meal on the grill, Foil Packet Potatoes are the way to go. Grilled Pineapple is also such a great side to have with grilled ham.

I also love to serve Grilled Vegetables with this ham to add some color to everyone’s plates. Of course, no meal is complete without dessert and Lemon Blueberry Crisp and ice cream will have everyone ready to hit the couch to relax after such a filling meal.

how to store leftover ham

Fridge: Store cooled ham in an airtight container in the refrigerator 3-5 days. Slice it before storing it so that it is easy to use if you are short on time making something to eat.

Freezer: You can freeze cooked ham if you don’t think you will eat it all within four days. Slice it ahead of freezing so you can pull out what you need at your convenience. Thaw overnight in the fridge.

how to reheat leftover grilled ham

In order to keep the ham moist, reheat in the microwave, oven or on the stovetop with some water so the ham retains moisture. Low and slow is better than high heat, as well.

This grilled ham looks absolutely mouthwatering! The caramelization on the edges, the glistening glaze, and the deep smoky char make it so visually appealing. The setting is also beautifully styled, with the rustic cutting board and the seasonings in the background adding a cozy, home-cooked feel. This is the kind of dish that would steal the show at any gathering!

Your next holiday meal is sure to be a success if you serve this sweet and savory spiral ham. Cooking it on the grill means you can spend more time visiting outside, too!

Ingredients

  • 1 smoked spiral ham 8-10 pounds

Honey Glaze

  • 2 ¼ cups Ginger Ale
  • 1 cup Brown sugar packed
  • 3 Tablespoons honey
  • 4 ½ teaspoons Apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Garlic cloves minced
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Dijon mustard

Instructions

  • Preheat the grill to a medium low heat about 250 degrees Fahrenheit using indirect heat, just turn the outside burners on and leave middle burners off.
  • In a small saucepan, combine the Ginger Ale, brown sugar, mustard, honey and apple cider vinegar. Bring to a boil. Cook until the glaze is reduced by half, about 15 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and Dijon mustard; cook 5 minutes longer. Remove from heat.
  • Remove all of the netting and wrapping from the ham and lay the ham in a large foil pan. Pull the slices apart one by one and drizzle honey glaze down in between the pieces. You will want to hold the front so the slices do not fall all the way over and tear. After that, brush the top of the ham with glaze.
  • Place the foil pan with the ham into the prepared grill and grill for about 3 hours, basting the ham with the juices in the pan every 30 minutes.
  • After 3 hours remove from the grill, tent with foil and let rest for 15 minutes before eating.

Tips

Fridge: Store cooled ham in an airtight container in the refrigerator 3-5 days. Slice it before storing it so that it is easy to use if you are short on time making something to eat.
